If you are new to wearing low rise jeans you might be wondering what to wear for a shirt, or how to accessorize your new look. With the right jeans, top, shoes, and belt you will feel much more confident stepping out the door in your outfit.

At the store, be sure to try on many different brands, cuts, and washes. For very thin women, the store is your oyster. Most of the rises and washes will look great on you. If you are less confident, or have a few extra pounds then a moderate rise and a darker wash will look much more flattering. When trying on jeans I recommend starting out with a size larger than you normally wear, even if you get stretch jeans. This will help combat any potential muffin top trying to escape! Also, a good length to buy your jeans (or have them tailored to if you are very short like I am), is just touching the floor, or a quarter of an inch below your heel. This allows you to wear the same pair with sneakers or flats, and high heels.  A great pair to try are these funky purple wedge shoes.  If you have an extreme heel in mind, get a pair longer knowing you will use it only with high-high heels.

Although having your jeans tucked into boots is very “in” right now, I personally do not recommend it with low-rise jeans. It detracts from the waist that you are trying to emphasize. I usually stick to a low profile shoe, converse for sneakers, or a dark heel for night time. Since you bought the jeans a size larger to begin with, adding a belt will not only help it stay put but will draw attention to your hips. Thick belts with interesting belt buckles work the best.

For shirts there are many options. Again, skinny girls have an advantage here. Tight t-shirts are an option for you. For everyone else, a shirt with a pretty empire waist will look great, and also hide your mid section when you sit down. Also anything that “flows” will compliment the style and help hide any negative side effects. For added effect, try carrying a purse that sits around your hips to further draw attention to your sexy hips and belt!

Wearing low rise jeans correctly allows your confidence and beauty to shine through. With the above tips and a confident attitude this daring style becomes possible!

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, low rise jeans on (most) guys is H-O-T! I love all sorts of fashions and have been following the industry for years and men wearing these jeans is one of my favorite trends. Like most fashions, this has experienced a cyclic effect. In fact, your dad probably wore this style at some point. They were very popular in the 1960s and 1970s with both men and women. When I see a man in a pair I know he has an eye for fashion, or at least a girlfriend with one! If you are a non-believer and think men shouldn’t wear low rise pants, read on.

Men have many different options for buying these jeans (a personal favorite is True Religion in ‘Joey’) but first you need to know how to work them. In general the “low rise” for men is much less drastic than for women. Look for jeans without any stretch, stretch is usually reserved for tighter girly styles. Loose jeans with a lower rise are great for showing off a stylish belt buckle, or even a bit of abs in the summer. Your stomach should NOT be out in general, but they are great for cooler days at the beach. Look for longer shirts when wearing these. Girls can get away with their belly bared, but typically this is not what a man is going for.

When wearing this style the jeans should be the focus. Draw attention to your toned mid section. Chains and patches will detract from the focus. More so than for women, a good body is almost a prerequisite. Also, this look is mostly for thin, toned guys to emphasize their leanness.

In addition to the expensive True Religion ‘Joey’, there are many others I would like to recommend. For the thrifty a great jean is Union Bay Low Rise Bootcut Jeans sold at most department stores, and are usually $20 – $40. Another mid range jean to try is the Men’s Levi’s 527 jean in the $50 price range. Both of these options come in different washes, so finding a favorite is easy. Another sexy choice is John Varvatos Star USA Slim Low-Rise. I got a pair of these for my boyfriend on his last birthday and he LOVED them. They are around $200.

A great pair of low rise jeans belong in any in shape guy’s closet! If you need help picking out a pair let me know and I’ll be glad to assist.

Having a pair of low rise jeans on hand is a must for most fashion forward people.  Some shirts just look better when paired with a low waist.  For example, you wouldn’t want your jeans showing through a pretty cashmere cardigan!  Do a simple search on froogle, ebay, or anywhere really, and you will find a daunting list of jeans.  If you are new to this style, it is hard to know where to begin.  In general, it is a great idea to go to a large department store, a mall, or an outlet center to try on basic cuts, washes, and styles.  Especially important is finding what rises you are comfortable wearing.  To help get you started I made a handy list of some of the best offerings to fit any budget.

Best Basic Jean
For the best basic jean, I would have to nominate Levi’s.  They can be found in many department stores and can sometimes be found as its own store in outlet centers.  My favorite is the Signature by Levi Strauss, in bootcut.  They range in price from $20 – $50 typically, and come in many washes and rises.  For a more fashionable jean they offer the 545 Low-Rise which look GREAT paired with heels.  What’s even better is they come in short, regular, and tall.

Low Rise on a Budget
For those of you who want to try the style without committing too much money, Target is a great place to shop.  Their Mossimo brand makes low rise jeans in regular and wide leg in a variety of washes.  They are a great beginner pair and will fit most body types.  They have a bit of stretch to them which will help you look your best without worrying too much about spilling over.  Best part:  These jeans go on sale throughout the year for under $14!  Buy them in every color, your closet will thank you.  The only downside is that Target doesn’t carry these jeans in short or tall varieties.

Designer Denim
If you are in the mood to splurge on your pair, Rock & Republic makes a jean to die for!  Ok, not literally, but their Kasandra low-rise jean would make any fashionista happy.  These sit pretty low on the waist, so try them on before you order!  They can be found through their website, or at Saks Fifth Avenue.  The price tag on these is around the $200 mark.  Think I’m crazy?  Try them on!  (And bring $200 for after you fall in love with them!)

Low rise jeans come in so many styles, colors, cuts, sizes, and as shown above, can fit into ANY budget.  Let me know your favorites!

A History of Low Rise Jeans

Low rise jeans have experienced an interesting and long history in American fashion.  Jeans are made of denim material and were initially worn by Dhungha sailors, eventually known as “dungarees.”  During the 1800’s these denim pants became popular in Italy.  They became popular in the United States for work purposes shortly thereafter.  Jeans – as we know them – became fashionable in the 1950’s when teenagers adopted the trend.

These jeans have existed in some from since the 60s.  At the time they were known as “hip huggers” and were very popular among the hippy culture, typically paired with psychedelic cotton tops and collared jackets.  Bell-bottomed hip huggers were worn by the iconic rock stars of the time.  Low rise jeans didn’t disappear after the 60s either.  In the 70s the fashion was adopted by disco lovers throughout the country, usually with large flared “bells”, worn by women and men alike.  Hip huggers fell out of fashion in the 80s and 90s as people began wearing pants high on the waist with narrower seams.

Although not completely disappearing, it wasn’t until the late 1990s and 2000s that the low rise jean became fashionable again.  American teens and 20 somethings revolted against the fashion sensibilities of their parents and embraced the low rise trend.  Many teenage based jean brands only sell low rise pants even to this day.  The rise on these jeans span a wide range, from sitting below the belly button to as low as you dare to go!  The rise of a pair of pants is defined as the distance between the waist and crotch.  Regular pants typically run about 12-13 inches.  With these jeans there can sometimes be a rise of as little as 3 inces!  Some high end brands can even be bought with a zipper that is less than 1 inch, serving only as decoration and a testament of the “ultra low rise.”  Down2There jeans have even went the next step in innovation, providing a cord allowing the rise to be completely adjustable!  Today straight or boot cut legs are in favor, however, they can be found in every color, wash, and fit imaginable.

Some people say that this style is now out of fashion and only popular among young teens.  However, a slight low rise can be very flattering assuming you avoid the dreaded muffin top.  Paired with the right shirt, low rise jeans can give the wearer a longer, and smoother (who likes to see the jeans poking through!), looking torso, or show off the abs they worked so hard for!

Low rise jeans, sometimes called hip huggers or low cut jeans, come in many flavors.  Due to their revival in the 2000s they can be found in many different sizes, cuts, washes, and styles.  This fashion is worn by both women and men.

Women
For women, the options for this style of jeans are nearly endless.  In addition to every shade of blue jean, they can easily be found in bright colors (not for the timid!).  Many women believe that a near-perfect body is necessary to wear this style.  However, the range of “rises” available (defined as the distance between the waist and crotch) and the fiber of the jeans make wearing low rise jeans an option for almost all of us.  For the thin a true jean as low as you dare to go looks great paired with t-shirts and tanks during the summer, and cute fitted sweatshirts during the winter.  Try on many combination’s of colors and cuts to find your personal favorite!  For the rest of us, care has to be taken to avoid the dreaded muffin-top!  Hip huggers are great for when you want your mid section to look smooth without your jeans getting in the way.  The rise of these jeans typically run from two inches below the navel to eight inches below!  For the most flattering look avoid the super and ultra low rises.  Also, pay attention to the type of material you are trying.  A great way to avoid the muffin top is to buy a pair with a bit of stretch, such as lycra, nylon, or other polymers.  Make sure your hips don’t spill over, and be sure to test them in a wide range of positions.  The last thing you want is to look like a plumber!  Think outside the box when making an ensemble.  You wouldn’t normally associate ivory wedding shoes with jeans, but the unusual combo can make you look very unique.

Men
The options in buying these jeans are not as plentiful for men, but this style is a great addition to any man’s closet.  For men the jeans tend to be baggier in the leg.  Traditional jeans have a rise from eleven to thirteen inches.  Low rise jeans for men range from seven to nine inches, just enough to show off a great belt buckle!  Men have been warming up to the trend and sometimes find shopping in the women’s jeans section a fun way to create a unique style.
